Killing squares.

Patapon is the first game for the PSP that I've really sat down and played in quite a while.  I think the last one was Puzzlequest.  Back to the point, Patapon is a really fun little game.  It's nestled somewhere between the action and rythm-game genres, but manages to be neither and both quite effectively.  Rythm, and keeping it in mind durring increasingly stressful situations, is key to games mechanic, but you never feel like you're playing a cheap knock off of DDR (Dance Dance Revolution).  Unlike DDR, thankfully, this game can be enjoyable played from the couch.  The gameplay is generally action oriented, but with a hint of strategy thrown in to keep things fresh.

Before you send your Patapon warriors into battle you'll need to assure that they are well equipped with weapons, and that their various platoons of combatants are well organized so as to be most effective in battle.  You can also add more units to your army, which you'll need to do as you tackle larger challenges.

The first time I played this game, I put down after about fifteen minutes.  However, a few hours later, I found myself drawn to it again, and this time I played for an hour or so.  The play-mechanic is strange at first, but there is something about it that draws you in once you get going.  I think the PSP needs more games like this to help solidify it as a prominent contender against the DS.  I don't think anyone doubts that the PSP is here to stay, but I still find its game library a little lame.  I'm not into platformers, and the rpg selection has been vast, but generally lame.  It's the puzzle games, and the unique gameplay systems that really give the system its draw.  Loco Rocco was great, and Patapon is far better.  I want to see more games that innovate like this on my PSP.

That is all.
