hmmm...

Is it possible to say, "I don't believe in god."  Without offending those that do?  The more I think about it, the less I believe that it is.  As soon as it is known that I'm an atheist, and that I don't believe in god, it assumed that I am looking down upon those around me.  If I don't believe in your god, than certainly I must think you're stupid, right?  I mean, as a non-believer, it looks like believers are just a bunch of people who spend a lot of time talking to ghosty-sky-people.  No one wants to be seen that way.

I would just as soon not have a conversation with with the devote over their beliefs, and quite frankly I'm not here to try and convert you to my point-of-view.  However, that does not mean that I am going to shy away from telling people, when they directly ask me, "What church are you with?" that I am an atheist.  I don't believe it's beneficial to lie.

Do I think believing in god makes you stupid?  No, I believe, for the most part, that it means you've been brought up your entire life indoctrinated in the ways of your church and its believers, and that it has never occurred to you to question the limits of your understanding.  This could be for many reasons.  Maybe your life has been a hard one, and you have not had much time for reflection.  Maybe your life has been an easy one, and you've never had a reason for serious reflection.  Maybe you're just not the type of person who takes everything your told and asks "why?"  Of course, maybe some of you actually are just stupid, but I doubt it's the majority.  No matter which of these is true, or if some other reason compels you to believe in the illogical, so long as you don't force your beliefs on me, and you do not try to enforce your version of morality upon me, than we will have no reason to quarrel.

Just because I do not believe in god, does not mean I'm out to get you if you do.  I just want to live my life the way I see fit, enjoying the good times, and surviving the bad.
